A little about scale-up (itung2 belajar. hehe)

What is the purpose of scaleing-up? Surely, for running more materials, to get more product capacity, and it is possible to optimate the operation economically. It was also allow the kitchen recipes to the commercial production.
Oh... I forget to ask you first question before this. Do you know about scale-up or have you ever hear this term? Simply, scale-up is bringing a object (in this term, process, or reactor) to a larger size to meet special criteria.

How we do scale-up? I have read the informations from some literatures; they mentioned that Basically, it consist of
1)      Laboratory (R&D)
2)      Pilot (mini)
3)      Plant
The application is according to the requirements and process conditions. In a scaleing-up, there must be an analysis and design, analysis and design for many times until reach the goal.

These are the criteria in bioprocess scale-up procedure:
  1. Similar Reynolds number or momentum factors.
  2. Constant power consumption per unit volume of liquid, Pg / V
  3. Constant impeller tip velocity, NDi
  4. Equal liquid mixing and recirculation times, time, tm
  5. Constant volumetric of mass transfer coefficient, KLa
  6. Keep all environmental factors for the microorganism constant.
Another important part in the scale-up is Quality because it is the key of scale-up success. There are two main concern in quality control; process and product, design and parameter. It was describe on this picture

Another concept offer that scale-up could be devided into two main classes; formula scale-up and process-equipment sale-up.
*Formula scale up:
True success, however, is best measured in terms of profitability and customer satisfaction over time

In addition, there are several variables to control physical operating parameters and microbial environmental conditions:
• Biomass concentration
• Sterile condition
• Effect of agitation and mass transfer
• Heat removal for temperature control
• pH control of the media
• Correct shear conditions

#that is a little about scale-up. for further, we need to leran more, more and more.
